Solved Can Kodi on Xbox One S (2017) play 4k videos natively?
#1
I ask this because i read this thread online, https://www.avsforum.com/threads/xbox-on...e.3235681/ and this has me confused about 4k playback on Kodi for Xbox. If no, what are some cheaper alternatives for 4k playback (please don't recommend the Nvidia shield as its not officially available in India and resellers sell it at really high prices)

doesn't answer your question but here are a few notes

the xbox one x was the "4K version" of the one s - so, was the one s ever 4K?
displaying a picture is not the same as playing a video on Kodi, a picture certainly may be scaled to the GUI but that is not the case with a Video so the OP on that post incorrectly tested 4K 'video'
xbox one series was discontinued 2 years ago, if it hasn't received proper updates then the new version of kodi may not even run on it
the post is regarding kodi 19.3 when the current version is 21, they are not going to be the same 'at all' - lots of changes in 2 years

your post indicates you would like an opinion on this as well, my opinion would be to not buy a 7 year old device
'cheaper' alternatives that play 4K, pretty much anything that isn't total crap these days will play 4K, Chromecast 4K, Firestick Max, FireTV Cube, Homatics, Dune and so on - see this post https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=376035

Oh sry to not clarify, I own a One S from 2018 but never bothered playing movies from it through a local media until now, I thought the xbox one S could handle any format thrown at it.
And about the 4k resolution thing, Xbox One X could run both games and streaming apps at native 4K, whereas the One S upscaled games to 4k BUT played streaming apps at native 4k, so I assumed Kodi was one of them too, hence the question.

if you already own one you would be in a better position than i would be to answer your question
- what happens when you play a 4K video? does it play? does it stutter?
- what signal is your display receiving? is it 1080p or 4K?
- what is the player process information on Kodi saying? https://kodi.wiki/view/Player_process_info

Okay never mind, yes, the One S can in fact, output videos at 4K with the only limitation being no HDR and Dolby Vision support (as of now the latest Kodi on Xbox One S which currently is v20). To get an HDR-like experience, change tone mapping to "Hable" and it gets closer to real HDR. Also what I found really great is the ability to play DTS formats because the default media player doesn't support DTS and straight up crashes. So guess I won't be getting another streaming device as of now, thank you. I hope actual HDR gets added in future.

I think it's already been added to the Omega nightly builds.

Just search for it on the Xbox Store.

I search it up on the Xbox store but it just shows the Nexus version, not the nightly/omega builds

Okay I found another weird thing, I have enabled pass through on xbox and Kodi, Dolby Digital files get passed to my AVR and my AVR does say that it's playing DD+. But when it comes to DTS files, it reverts back to my default xbox setting that is Dolby Atmos but it plays audio (Huh?). So seems like DTS audio doesn't get passed to the AVR for some reason, what do I do to fix this?

Sound like the Xbox is not truely bitstreaming and is encoding the audio. Check your Xbox audio settings.

See https://support.xbox.com/en-GB/help/hard...assthrough

Make sure you have Allow Passthrough enabled.

Yep, I have enabled this prior to posting my previous reply, Dolby formats get passed to AVR but DTS doesn't, the moment DTS gets involved, it starts enchoding. Do I need a toslink cable or something for this? Just for reference, the AVR in question is a Marantz Nr1609 with a 5.1 Jamo S426 setup.

Does the Xbox display Passthrough when you hit the X button while something is playing just to confirm it is entering passthrough mode.
