I already raised the question in the Video-Addon section. As I got no response I am raising it here again, hoping for someone with JSON API background.
The point of interest is how "watched" tags are handled in Kodi server UI for video items listed by the Youtube Addon. In the Kodi UI "watched" Youtube videos will show a check mark. This means the Kodi server is aware which videos have been watched, which is equivalent to the Kodi JSONRPC API responding with "playcount" > 0 for such items. But as a matter of fact the JSON API always responds with "playcount" = 0.
Is this a bug in the JSON API which can be fixed?
