Almost one year and no solution offered. I have confirmed all versions of Kodi 19.X have this bug and 20.x as well. I even tested Kodi 21.0 "Omega" Beta 2 which does the same.

Do I need to report this bug somewhere else?

nope, such a thing is not possible. as soon as you press any key, kodi will exit the screensaver... just like you'd expect from a screensaver.

2. apparently the add-on has problems with supporting .arw and .heic format images - or at least some of them

3. I have found a problem with displaying a jpg image which was shot in fisheye mode

thanx for reporting your issues.

#1 the errors in your log come from a third party python addon.
i've created a pull request for that addon to get rid of those messages

as for #2 and #3, this screensaver addon is not responsible for actually displaying your images, that's Kodi's job.
all this addon basically does, is create a 'playlist' of your image files and hand over that list to Kodi.
all further image processing is outside of the hands of this addon.

at least in my OSMC kodi variant the standard ADD-ONS

were disabled by default
after enabling them all seems to be Ok

to enable them
settings > add-ons > my addons > image... > find each one and enable it

Is any way to enable a "chatty" = info / debug mode for logs in your script?

probably is not related to your script / addon but if I'll be able to just force the script to send in the logs the info about what picture is displayed at that particular moment I'll be able to find the root of it.

all my phones / tablets went through standard updates
at some point in between 2024 Jun/July and December  the saved pictures do not show the date any longer on the screensaver
no error is thrown in logs

I don't see any difference in the exif info at the dates/times data


for the rest who might be able to help

this are 2 exif info
- older one is showing the date/time tag on the screensaver
- newer one not
- both are taken by the same device - software version difference only.

@larieu if you enable debug logging in Kodi, you will also get the debug logging from this addon in your Kodi logfile.
Settings > System > Logging > Enable debug logging

i don't see anything wrong with the Exif data you posted, both look fine to me.
the Picture Slideshow Screensaver will get the date from the Exif 'Date/Time Original ' field.

Innitially I have suspected this difference

Exif Byte Order                 : Little-endian (Intel, II)
vs
Exif Byte Order                 : Big-endian (Motorola, MM)

but it seems is not the only thing which is triggering this
Initially only one phone did this and I was circling to debug that one

Recently the other phones update the fw/sw, too.
and are behaving in the same manner.

there are 2 x Samsung Galaxy 23 Ultra and a Flip S
all are having the same problem now
The behavior started on the second Galaxy 23 EXACTLY after the update of the firmware.

On any other things I try to see the info date is working as supposed
Synology photos - OK
Any of my linux install ... - all OK
Any win/linux softare I tried - all OK
- this tells me that if it is something off it is in that particular install of the OSMC

all the exif info I take I read them either form synology  (cli ) or my linux machine
but any other software shows the data correctly

The architecture is
Model        : Raspberry Pi 3 Model B Rev 1.2
with OSMC ( latest available software )
is connecting nfs to a synology folder /volume1/root_path/folders by year/month

Because I cannot do the debug / reading directly from the OSMC ( I cannot see directly the NFS and the OSMC has no exiftool /ffmpeg installed on it - it is relying only on the OSMC/KODI stuff...)
Now I'm trying to go in one of this 2 directions:
